To kick off the school year and begin with an open ended assignment in which the students could demonstrate their drawing interests and skills in using different drawing media. We started with Arttist Trading Cards. ATC's are a new way for Artists to network with other artists and create small trading card size artworks which they trade at meet-ups or through trading by selecting artworks on the internet which are then mailed back and forth as a trade. The small size of these miniature artworks meant that they can be created relatively quickly and then traded as a novel way to build a community of artists and as a way to build an appreciation of the work of their peers. The students enjoyed the social aspect of interacting with their peers and negotiating trading their cards with other student-artists. Thank You to trusty volunteer Terry Mazig for submitting these great photos from our mortar day last week! Many thanks to Terry and Heather Walker for helping out on Friday. Much appreciated.
Thank You a hundred times to the Hanson Family Foundation for funding our mural project. It is so wonderful to have generous support of the arts here at Field Community School. The school year has ended, but the mural will live on! The work continues. There are 12 panels completed for the mural. Each panel has 18 student ceramic tiles that illustrate some aspect of the Hale and Field history. Many are about the neighborhood and the schools themselves. Some students chose to address racism in the past and the present. Tiles also commemorate prominent figures in our neighborhood history like Mike Andrews, Archie Givens, Lena Olive Smith, the Lee Family and more. Here are a few images of single tiles and then whole mural panels.
